Four people were shot Thursday afternoon in Mount Airy, North Carolina, leaving at least two dead, authorities said.

Officers responded to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. local time, according to the Surry County Sheriff’s Office. Two of the victims were pronounced dead, while the conditions of the other two were not immediately known.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said its agents are assisting local authorities as the investigation continues.

“The Surry County Sheriff’s Office and the SBI are on the scene collecting evidence and investigating,” the agency said in a statement.

Welcome Baptist Church, located across the street from the shooting scene, said in a Facebook post that the incident did not involve the church and that all of its members were safe.

Mount Airy is located in northwestern North Carolina, near the Virginia state line.
